The Blogging Flu

Here I am, writing this post while I’m wearing my pajamas and bathrobe still coughing and blowing my nose. At this time of the year, a lot of people get sick. A common cold or the flu, these are always more present in the colder months of the year. Having a case of the sniffles myself, it got me thinking about another kind of sickness that might be dangerous for all the bloggers out there…

The Blogging Flu
The blogging flu is especially dangerous for new bloggers. Their resistance is lower because they haven’t experienced the traps that come with blogging. Usually they’ll get rid of that nasty blogging flu after about three months. Warning: this does not mean that experienced bloggers are in the safe zone. They too can catch the blogging flu, you’ll notice it when they start looking paler and won’t come out of the house anymore (or only want to if you go and take outfit pictures with them). In this case, step up as a friend, drag them out of the house and plan a spa day & wild party together.
If you’re worried about your blogger friends, here are some symptoms that you can recognize.

Symptoms
-
You’ll notice that the person who caught the blogging flu will start using words that may seem weird to you such as blogosphere or blogging buddies. They will also use the words community, comments and followers a lot.

- You know you’ve caught the blogging flu when you start converting everything about your life in to a post.”Oh this shopping trip would make a great new post for my blog!” or “I could definitely use this topic to write about”.

- Your camera is working overtime and EVERYTHING is interesting enough for you to snap pictures of. This includes your lunch, your dinner, a pretty dessert, flowers, bugs, patterns, the sky, …

-You create a slight internet addiction. You feel strange if you haven’t been online in a day. Next to your blog, you probably have Twitter, Facebook & Tumblr and have an account on Lookbook, Chictopia, Hypeed, Weardrobe and you feel like you’re spending half your day updating all these pages.

- You notice that you’re scouting locations for outfit pictures and that you no longer think “what a pretty sky” but more “oh this color of the sky would look great with that particular outfit for the picture”.

How to get healthy
It’s not that hard! Like all things in life, you need to find a balance. Ultimately, I suspect you’ll want to spend time with your friends, family or boyfriend. That’s definitely a step in the right direction! Good luck beating the blogging flu ;)

hahah, after reading this I have come to the conclusion that I have a severe case of the blogging flu and didn’t even realize it…I think the fact that I am posting this at 1:20 am is proof of that :) I think I’ll go for a run tomorrow :P

What a great analogy!! As you say, we’re all susceptible to the blogging flu, however much we believe we’ve built up a resistance…

This is such an adorable post! I’ve definitely experienced some of these symptoms in the past and really have tried since moving to a new city not to be that way around not bloggy friends (e.g., like all of them!).

I’m loving this style of post you’ve been writing lately- so cute, and right on the mark with what a lot of us are feeling! I’ve been feeling unwell myself and have been in the hospital with strep throat for the past three days. I knew I was really starting to get better when I began noticing what the nurses around me were wearing! Haha.
    Hope you feel better soon!

Ha! That is soo true!! And the blogging flu can lead to the Blogger Burnout very fast, and that’s can take even longer to recover from!

    Such a cute post!

  16. Emily says:

Ah, it’s so true. The other day I was able to identify which way was West in a new city purely because I’d already sussed out the sunset-light situation for outfit posts. Scary. I’m getting over it though!

  24. Haha, what a cute post! I hope you are feeling better! I have a bit of a cold myself and I’m doing everything I can to try and get over it. Although, staying up late to blog is definitely not helping out my case. Looks like I am suffering from both *sigh!

Ahhhh, yes….I believe I came down with that ages ago!

  26. Cool post I can definitely relate.

Apologise for the lack of commenting got a bit behind over the christmas period. I think you definitely have to strike a balance between the real world and the internet. But as you say it can get addictive, especially twitter and there seems to be more and more social media websites popping up that require updating and maintaining.

Such a clever metaphor! It is uncanny how blogging can be more like a disease or an addiction than a hobby sometimes, isn’t it?
